Traditional vs. digital marketing: what works for a small business in Georgia in 2026

Flyers, radio and newspapers versus Google, social media and online ads. We compare costs, reach and results so you can decide with data, not hunches.

For years, a business in Marietta or Savannah got the word out with flyers, local newspaper ads, a radio spot or a billboard on the highway. That's traditional marketing. Today there's another option: digital marketing, which lives on Google, on social media, in email and on your customers' phones.

The difference in one sentence

Traditional marketing talks to a lot of people and hopes someone is interested. Digital marketing talks to the person who is already searching for what you sell, and lets you measure what happened with every dollar.

Quick comparison

  • Reach: a flyer reaches one neighborhood; a Meta ad can reach only homeowners in the ZIP codes you choose.
  • Measurement: radio can't tell you how many people called because of your spot; Google Ads tells you how many clicks and calls each ad generated.
  • Budget: with digital you can start small and increase spending when you see results; with traditional you almost always pay up front.
  • Speed: changing a digital ad takes minutes; reprinting flyers takes days.
  • Trust: here, traditional still has power in some communities. A well-placed sign or a sponsorship at church or with the local soccer league still builds trust.

Where the money is going

Businesses have already voted with their budgets. According to MAGNA, U.S. ad spending on digital platforms grew 10% to $297 billion in 2025, while traditional media fell 7%. Radio, for example, dropped to about $12.2 billion. And globally, WARC estimates that social media advertising will reach $394.6 billion in 2026, up 21% from the previous year.

It's not a fad: it's where people are. In the U.S., 93% of the population uses the internet (DataReportal, 2026) and 73% of local business searches start on a phone (BrightLocal, 2026).

So should I throw the flyers away?

Not necessarily. The best approach is to combine them: a flyer with a QR code that leads to your website, a wrapped truck with your WhatsApp number, or a local sponsorship that invites people to leave a Google review. Traditional opens the door, and digital keeps it open.

And remember: digital doesn't mean just Instagram

Many business owners go from flyers to posting on Instagram and think they're "doing digital." But digital marketing includes your Google profile, your reviews, your website, ads, WhatsApp follow-up and email. Social media is one piece, not the whole system.

Frequently asked questions

Is traditional marketing dead?

No, it still works, especially for building trust in the community. It works best when connected to digital, for example with a QR code or an invitation to leave a review.

Which one is cheaper?

Digital lets you start with small budgets and adjust every week. With traditional you almost always pay up front and don't know how many customers it brought in.

Can I measure the results of a flyer?

It's hard, but you can get close by using a phone number, code or link that's unique to that campaign.
