Google reviews: why 85% of customers decide based on them, and how to ask without feeling awkward
Stars and what your customers write matter more than any ad. 2026 data and a simple method to get more reviews in Marietta, Cobb County and across Georgia.
Before calling you, your next customer in Marietta, Kennesaw or Smyrna is going to read what others say about you. Reviews are good old word of mouth, but now visible to thousands of people.
What the 2026 data says
BrightLocal's survey of U.S. consumers (February 2026) is clear:
- 97% read reviews of local businesses.
- 85% are more likely to hire a business after reading positive reviews, and 77% are put off by negative ones.
- 41% always read reviews, up from 29% a year earlier.
- 31% only hire businesses with 4.5 stars or more, up from 17% in 2025.
- 74% look for reviews from the last three months. Old ones no longer convince.
- 80% prefer businesses that respond to all their reviews, but 50% are annoyed by generic copy-and-paste replies.
In short: you need reviews that are good, recent and answered.
How to ask without feeling like you're begging
- Ask at the happy moment: when the customer says "it looks perfect," that's your cue.
- Make it easy: send the direct link to your Google review page by WhatsApp or text. If they have to search for you, they won't.
- Be specific: "Could you leave a review mentioning the job we did?" gets more useful reviews than "leave us 5 stars."
- Automate it: a CRM can send the message on its own, one day after the job is done.
- In both languages: if your customers speak Spanish and English, have the message ready in both.
How to respond
For good reviews, say thanks using the person's name and the service: "Thanks, Marta, we loved getting your Smyrna patio ready." For bad ones, reply calmly, without arguing, and offer to resolve it privately. The person reading your reply isn't just the upset customer: it's everyone who comes after.
Reviews are digital marketing
Many people think digital marketing means posting on Instagram. But a good reputation on Google can bring you more customers than a hundred posts. It's one of the pieces nobody sees that sells the most.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay or give something in exchange for reviews?
No. It's against Google's rules and can get reviews removed or your profile penalized. Ask all your customers for honest reviews.
What do I do about a fake or unfair review?
Reply calmly and professionally, and report it to Google if it violates their policies.
How many reviews do I need?
There's no magic number. What matters is having recent, steady reviews, because 74% of customers look for reviews from the last three months.
